George Street
Location: Sydney, Australia
Year Transformed: Stage 1 opened 2020, completed 2022
Lead Agencies:City of Sydney, Transport for NSW
Overview
George Street, one of Sydney’s oldest and busiest corridors, was historically a traffic-heavy arterial road. As part of a major urban renewal project linked to the light rail rollout, sections of George Street between Central Station and Circular Quay were progressively pedestrianised, transforming it into a people-first civic spine for the city.
What Changed?
- Previous Conditions: Multi-lane road with buses and general traffic, limited footpath space, poor pedestrian amenity
- New Design: Fully pedestrianised or light-rail-only zone from Hay Street to Hunter Street
- Street Features Added:
- Wide stone paving and shared surfaces
- Street trees and green infrastructure
- Integrated street furniture and lighting
- Flexible event space and outdoor dining
Community Involvement
The project was guided by the City of Sydney’s Sustainable Sydney 2030 strategy and included public exhibitions, business engagement, and design competitions. The use of the light rail as a catalyst helped align state and city government priorities.
“This is a once-in-a-century opportunity to reshape the heart of the city.” – Clover Moore, Lord Mayor of Sydney
Outcomes
- Pedestrian Use: Increased dramatically post-pandemic, especially for outdoor dining and events
- Business Impact: Retail footfall and street activation rebounded strongly
- Traffic Reduction: Cars removed from key segments entirely
- Public Response: Positive feedback and international acclaim for city centre revitalisation
Benefits
- Created a major public space spine in central Sydney
- Supported post-COVID outdoor economy recovery
- Reduced noise, emissions, and conflicts between modes
- Established a clear precedent for further pedestrian zones
