👻 You’ve found the Ghost of Newtown Forest
This patch of concrete used to be a forest. For a little while, anyway.
In June, locals turned the Triangle of Shame, the bare pedestrian island outside Newtown Station, into the Newtown Community Forest. It had plants, pollinators, a seat, a barbecue, even a soundscape. People loved it.
Then on 21 July, Transport for NSW sent two trucks and five police cars to take it away. Nobody had complained.
But you can’t kill a good idea. It just comes back to haunt you.
🌿 The forest is back, in spirit
These little ghost forests mark what was here, and what could be here again: a green gateway to Newtown instead of a slab of asphalt between lanes of traffic.
🚦 Why it matters
King Street doesn’t have to be a traffic sewer. More trees mean cooler streets, slower cars and a main street people actually want to spend time on.
